Guide to Cast Iron Fittings

Plumbing pipes come in a variety of materials such as cast iron, copper, PVC, and PEX. Fittings are iron, brass, plastic, and copper. This guide covers cast iron fittings, their purpose, and applications.

Uses for Pipe Wrap Tape

Pipe wrap tape has a variety of practical uses in plumbing, the oil and gas industry, and at commercial or industrial facilities. It creates a watertight seal on pipes, both plastic and metal. For example, in plumbing, pipe wrap tape adds another layer of protection against leaks and drips.

Sealing is just one application. Pipe wrap tape can wrap any pipe, from those in oil and gas fields to an underground sprinkler system. Pipe wrap tape is excellent at preventing corrosion, insulating pipes against freezing, and covering sharp edges.

What Makes Pipe Wrap Tape Different?

Manufacturers design pipe wrapping tape specifically for pipe systems. The key benefits that set it apart from other types of tape include:

  • Heat and cold resistance
  • Moisture resistance
  • Corrosion prevention

Other types of tape like duct tape and electrical tape will melt if a pipe gets extremely hot, nor are they fully waterproof. Tapes that receive approval from the UPC can withstand the elements, both above and below ground.

How to Choose Pipe Wrap Tape

You want a UPC approved PVC coated tape with a rubber-based adhesive. It will offer a strong bond in all plumbing situations. PVC pipe wrap is the most common type used, but consider the following before you buy:

  • Backing: Backing material includes PVC, SPVC, self-fusing silicone, and foam. Plumbers use PVC tapes for general applications, while a self-fusing backing would create a stronger bond.
  • Adhesive: Choose adhesives based on the average temperate at the site and other factors. You can choose from rubber-based adhesives that create strong bonds. These are widely used. There are also silicon and acrylic backings, but acrylic takes longer to cure.
  • Thickness and Length:. Each roll of pipe wrap tape comes in a certain length. Measure before you order to get the right tape. Also, thickness depends on the type of material used in the tape; you use thicker tapes for insulation.

The Importance of Detectable Underground Warning Tape

Detectable underground warning tape helps detect, locate, identify, and protect buried utility lines such as water, gas, electrical, sewer, and telecommunications. Detectable underground warning tape comes in different widths, usually 3 inches or 6 inches. You choose the width you use based on the size of and how deeply buried the underground utility is.

How Does It Work?

Detectable underground warning tape has an alum Detectable Underground Warning Tapeinum foil backing that makes it easy to locate with a metal detector. Properly installed, this warning tape can eliminate a potentially catastrophic digging accident. It lets you easily and accurately locate the utilities, so you know where to dig.

What Should You Look For?

Look for an industrial tape supplier with a variety of detectable underground warning tapes in stock. The tape should have excellent flexibility, have no adhesive, and be printable. Some colors you should consider:

Why Is It Important?

Detectable underground warning tape lets you locate and prevent damage to valuable underground utility installations. When excavating, if you don’t locate the utilities first, you are facing severe injury, high repair costs, fines, and outages. According to the Underground Detective, every 6 minutes someone damages an underground utility line because they dug without locating utilities first.

Using detectable underground warning tape in your construction projects lets others find the utilities easily so you can avoid an expensive and dangerous catastrophe.

Industrial Tapes: Pipe Wrap, PVC Electrical Insulating, Barricade, and More

Industrial and commercial contractors have used tape products around the world in a variety of applications, from petroleum pipelines to commercial construction. Industrial pipe wrap tape protects metal piping systems from corrosion above and below ground while PVC electrical tape insulates electrical wires and cables. Barricade tape provides a protected area around a construction site, and underground/detectable tape marks electrical, irrigation, gas, telephone lines, and more. The following digs deeper in each type of industrial tape to give you a more in-depth view of their uses.

Heavy Duty Tape: Tips and Uses

Heavy duty tape like electrical insulating and conductive tapes have a variety of backings and adhesives for a wide range of applications and environments. They offer high-temperature resistance and tensile strengths as well as durability and dielectric strength needed in insulating applications. Heavy duty tape is also cut-through and abrasion resistance.

What Can You Use Heavy Duty Tape For?

Here are the key applications for heavy duty tape:

  • Electric insulation below 600 volts
  • Insulating wrapping of electric wires and cables
  • Marking electric wires and cables
  • Use indoor and outdoor

Use PVC tape for insulation and protection over wires and connectors, over splicing and filler compounds, for high voltage electrical appliances, and wire harnessing and maintenance.

What Do the Different Colors Mean?

Contractors use black electrical tape for insulation. They use the other colors to show the voltage level and phase of the wire. The electrician places a ring of electrical tape on each wire near the termination so the wire’s purpose is obvious. Here are what the colors mean:

  • Black – Insulation, low voltage, phase A
  • Red – Low voltage, phase B
  • Blue – Low voltage, phase C
  • Brown – High voltage, phase A
  • Orange – High voltage, phase B
  • Yellow – High voltage, phase C
  • Green – Earth ground

What to Look for in Heavy Duty Tape?

The Underwriters Laboratories approve tape for electrical applications. Look for their approval label on any heavy duty tape before you buy. Also look for 600 volt rated and temperature rated at 80 degrees Celsius and 176 degrees Fahrenheit. Finally, make sure the heavy duty tape you use is ASTHM-D-1000 tested.

Types of Barricade Tapes and Their Uses

Barricade tape is a brightly colored tape with a two-tone pattern of colors used to get someone’s attention. Some brightly colored barricade tapes feature the words “Caution” and “Danger to warm others about a situation that could be hazardous.

When you block off the entrance to something with barricade tape, you prevent someone from accidentally entering an area that could be dangerous. Barricade tape is a visual warning sign in an industrial or commercial building site or a roadworks construction site.

While barricade tape is fairly self-explanatory, did you know the different color combinations have different uses and meanings?

OSHA and ANSI Regulations

All barricade tape designs must comply with OSHA and ANSI regulations. Here are the two most common colors and uses of barricade tapes:

  • Red and white barricade tape – Use red and white barricade tape to signify fire prevention and protection equipment. For example, you can use red barricade tape to show danger from overhead work, live electrical components, scaffold under construction, or even the swing around the radius of equipment that rotate.
  • Yellow and black caution tape – This combination usually incorporates printed text like “Caution.” Construction sites use it to let people know about the possible hazards on site. For example, yellow and black caution tape would block someone from falling in a hole.

While it is possible to buy plain barricade tape to write a custom message on it, you should be careful to comply with OSHA and ANSI regulations.

Final Thoughts

Barricade tape is very durable, resilient, and tear-proof. Depending on the manufacturer, it can come in various widths and sizes. The most common size is 3 inches wide and lengths of 300 feet or 1,000 feet.
